He excelled in all areas of painting, especially figures, birds and flowers, and insects, and in each subject he was able to express a highly personal quality of lyricism. Ch’en Hung-shou’s paintings reveal an unusual vision, but they nevertheless remain grounded in the traditional rules of painting. This painting shows a scholar seated upon a rock strumming a ch’in. Six maidens serve in attendance; one presents a platter, one holds a red chowry, one holds an incense burner, one presents an antique pot with a branch of coral, one holds a juan lute, and the last wields a white feather fan. &*1.〈明陳洪綬撫琴圖〉,收入國立故宮博物院編,《晚明變形主義畫家作品展》(臺北:國立故宮博物院,1977年九月初版),頁428。 &* 陳洪綬(西元一五九九至一六五二年),浙江諸暨人,字章侯,號老蓮。甲申後自稱悔遲,又曰勿遲。人物花鳥草蟲無不精妙,皆能自出機杼。所作人物軀幹偉岸,容貌威猛,線條扭曲宛若繞指柔鋼,饒有奇趣,而又不失尺度。 本幅畫士人巾服坐磐石撫琴,仕女六人環侍,由前至後,一捧盤,一執紅拂,一捧香爐,一捧古瓶,內插珊瑚,一抱阮,一持白羽扇。
